  • Subject of the session: Nano-objects such as ultrathin layers, quantum dots, nanoparticles, nanowires, are at the heart of an intense research activity, because of their specific properties and their potential use in a vast range of applications. It is of prime importance to understand how these properties can be modified by stresses, independent whether they are externally applied or a consequence of growth or processing including local re-arrangements of the atomic structure and chemistry. Several answers were recently obtained through the development of experimental devices allowing for fabricating nano-objects, measuring strain fields at the nanoscale or structure-chemistry relations determined with atomic resolution. Besides, simulations begin to reach the point of closing the gap with experiments, opening the way to fruitful comparisons. Overall, investigations indicate that mechanical properties dramatically change when characteristic dimensions are reduced to the nanoscale. However, there is still a long road to be able to make routine measurements, to predict behaviors from simulations and models, and to fully determine and understand the mechanisms at play in these objects. The objective of this symposium is to present latest results in this multidisciplinary field, and to stimulate discussions to overcome the current state of the art. More specifically, we welcome submissions related to:

    • Mechanical properties at small scale, such as elasticity, plasticity, fatigue and fracture
    • Development of methods allowing for local fields mapping or mechanical te
    • Coupling between growth, stress and composition in nano-objects
    • Modeling and numerical simulations
    • Strain-engineered physical properties

    Invited speakers:

    • Christoph Kirchlechner (Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, Düsseldorf, Deutschland & Materialphysik, Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria)
    • Hosni Idrissi (Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgien)
    • Jon Molina Aldareguia (Madrid Institute of Advanced Materials, Spanien)
    • Sandrine Brochard (Université de Poitiers-CNRS-ENSMA, Frankreich)

Organizers: Prof. Gerhard Dehm (Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH), Prof. Olivier Thomas (IM2NP Aix-Marseille Université), Dr. Laurent Pizzagalli (Institut P’).

Abstract submission deadline: December 1, 2017.

  • The 10th European Solid Mechanics Conference, organized by the University of Trento and the University of Bologna, will be held in  Bologna, under the auspices of EUROMECH, during July 2-6, 2018.

The ESMC is the major event for the solids mechanics community in Europe and provides a unique forum for scientists and engineers to exchange ideas on the current state-of-the-art in the mechanics of solids, on new concepts and ideas and to identify new research directions. The General (contributed) Sessions for this conference have been organized into nine main areas. In addition, more than 50 Mini-Symposia will be organized in a range of specialized topics.

Focus on one Mini-symposium: 4-1 - Experimental Micromechanics and Nanomechanics

Organizers: Gerhard Dehm (Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung), Jon Molina-Aldareguía (IMDEA Materials Institute), Miguel Monclus (IMDEA Materials Institute)

Description: Micro and Nanomechanical testing methods have become extremely important to characterize the mechanical behavior of materials. There has been a rapid expansion of available testing strategies in recent years to examine elastic, plastic, and fracture properties of materials at small scales, with control of loading mode, temperature and atmosphere, including imaging in real-time. This symposium aims to bring together the rapidly growing micro- and nanomechanical testing research community, particularly in the areas of:

    1. Nanoindentation
    2. Testing of nanostructures, thin-films and coatings
    3. Interface phenomena
    4. FIB/lithography based nano- and micromechanical testing
    5. Time-resolved in situ SEM, EBSD, AFM, X-Ray/synchrotron and TEM mechanical testing
    6. Size effects in mechanical properties
    7. Deformation mechanisms in small volumes
    8. Fracture at small length scales

Deadline for abstract submission : November 15, 2017

More information on the ESMC are available here and about the Mini Symposium, information here.

  • Subject: In situ synchrotron X-ray monitoring of the growth of defect-free two-dimensional materials by liquid-metal catalytic routes.

Function: The successful candidate will participate in a team of postdocs and PhD fellows who will develop and investigate the growth of 2D materials on liquid metals surfaces using an especially developed growth reactor which will be placed at the ESRF, Grenoble. The growth by chemical vapor deposition at high pressure and temperatures will be characterized in situ, by means of two main techniques: Raman and X-ray scattering (Grazing Incidence X-Ray Scattering and Reflectivity). It will be complemented by theoretical calculations performed in Munich. More specifically, the successful candidate will be in charge; together with a PhD student, of the in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering measurements, which will make use of the ESRF ID10 liquid scattering beamline  and diffractometer as well as of the P08 beamline of PETRA-III and the LISA diffractometer, in Desy.  She/he will be under the supervision of Gilles Renaud from CEA/INAC and of Oleg Konovalov, the ESRF scientist in charge of the ID10 beamline.

Application: This is a full time, 3 year fixed term contract, located at Grenoble, ESRF with several experiments in Hamburg (Desy-Petra-III). Interested applicants should submit:

    • 1 page cover letter stating the motivation, research experience and goals, and anticipated available
      date;
    • curriculum vitae, and
    • contact information for 3 references (reference letters are not required at this time)

to Gilles Renaud: CEA-Grenoble INAC/MEM/NRS and Univ. Grenoble Alpes, 17 rue des Martyrs, 38054 Grenoble Cedex, France. email: gilles.renaud@cea.fr.

    Application deadline:  October 30, 2017
